Fenestration testing is the process of evaluating the performance of windows, doors, and other building envelope components to assess their ability to withstand environmental factors.
For curtain walls to maintain functionality in extreme conditions, AAMA 501.1-17 is the standard test for evaluating water penetration dynamic pressure. This test is used to provide quality assurance for the structural integrity of exterior wall systems and their ability to resist water penetration and air leakage.
Less extreme air and moisture penetration tests include AAMA 501.2-15 and AAMA 503-24.
In addition to curtain walls, these tests are also applicable for storefronts, window walls, weather-resistive barriers, coping, and fascia.
Water penetration testing is conducted at the specified air pressure differential by using a wind generator employing an 84" diameter propeller. Water is simultaneously sprayed onto the exterior face of the assembly at the required rate of 5 mph/ft. Testing will last for 15 minutes while the interior face of the test area is inspected for water leakage.
For new curtain walls, it may be recommended to conduct fenestration testing as soon as possible, and at five, 50, and 90 percent completion. Testing before installation helps the project team understand the initial performance of the fenestration product. Testing throughout installation is needed to ensure installation quality remains constant.
After successful completion of the test, the curtain wall will meet the performance criteria for air infiltration and water penetration resistance.
Curtain walls are a crucial part of a building's envelope, providing structural support and protection from the elements. Testing ensures that the curtain wall system can withstand various environmental conditions, thus ensuring the safety of occupants and the integrity of the building.
Complying with building codes and regulations reduces the risk of legal issues. Knowing that your curtain wall meets specific standards and performance criteria will prevent issues down the road.
Testing of the curtain wall system is crucial for identifying weaknesses and flaws, which allows for necessary adjustments and improvements to be made. This process ultimately ensures the quality and durability of the system, thereby reducing the risk of costly repairs or replacements in the future. By conducting thorough testing, potential issues can be addressed proactively, leading to a more reliable and long-lasting curtain wall system.
By testing curtain wall systems for performance and durability, builders and developers can assure clients and occupants that the building will withstand various environmental challenges over its lifespan. This enhances customer satisfaction and confidence in the building's reliability.
